Most of those reporters simply chose not to renew their hard passes, and the White House still allowed those reporters to apply for a day pass. Only one person \u2014 who did not meet all of the news criteria \u2014 was denied a hard pass.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House links to a press release it issued Monday detailing some Democratic controversies with the press titled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/releases\/2026\/09\/white-house-access-is-a-privilege-not-a-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House Access Is a Privilege \u2014 Not a Right<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The talking points were included in an email titled \u201cWhite House Highlights,\u201d which was sent to GOP offices in the House and Senate, according to a House GOP aide and a senior GOP Senate aide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other talking points supplied to Republicans are these arguments:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cNo member of the public or the press has a freestanding constitutional right to access the White House complex.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cFabricating facts or reporting verifiable falsehoods from inside the White House complex is an intentional breach of professional decorum and it is severely disruptive to the mission and purpose of the White House.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the claims of \u201cfabricating facts or reporting verifiable falsehoods,\u201d the talking points do not identify any specific report by MS NOW, CNN or Politico as an example of such conduct, and Trump has said his ban isn\u2019t because of any particular story.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-rkv-video\" data-wp-interactive=\"msnbcVideo\" data-wp-context=\"{&quot;post&quot;:{&quot;id&quot;:1372316,&quot;permalink&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/www.ms.now\/ms-now\/watch\/hayes-trump-s-anti-free-speech-scheme-won-t-work-2514925635673&quot;,&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https:\/\/vs-newsencoding.akamaized.net\/MSNBC\/n_micdrop_260922_hayes_scheme\/1\/hls\/index.m3u8&quot;,&quot;slug&quot;:&quot;hayes-trump-s-anti-free-speech-scheme-won-t-work-2514925635673&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;Hayes: Trumpu0026#8217;s anti-free speech u0026#8216;schemeu0026#8217; District Court, the media organizations note that the White House grounds are a \u201cnonpublic forum,\u201d as established in <a href=\"https:\/\/law.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/appellate-courts\/cadc\/24-5004\/24-5004-2025-04-08.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ateba v. Leavitt<\/a>, and because it\u2019s a nonpublic forum, the government can\u2019t discriminate based on viewpoints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, when the Secret Service revoked the White House press passes of reporters from these media organizations, the government agency was breaking the code of federal regulations, which states that the Secret Service\u2019s granting of these press passes must be \u201cguided solely by the principle of whether the applicant presents a potential source of physical danger to the President and\/or the family of the President so serious as to justify his or her exclusion from White House press privileges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump himself has also <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/atrupar\/status\/2101048036914769969?s=20\">referred to the ban<\/a> as a \u201cban on the free press.\u201d And in explaining his motive, Trump said, \u201cthere\u2019s something wrong with a country that can allow people to write purposely negative stories,\u201d and that \u201cif they want to write them, that\u2019s fine, but I don\u2019t have to let them into my \u2014 into the people\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when reporters pressed Trump on whether there was a particular reason or story that had triggered his ban, he said no.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s really just cumulative stories over the last two years,\u201d Trump said, further claiming without evidence that the organizations \u201cpurposely write negative news\u201d and do so \u201cbecause they want to try and diminish the Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The talking points also include a quote from President Trump, which he issued on <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/117308890736529824\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Truth Social<\/a> on Monday, about the ban.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cIt is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America. It is corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control. It is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped, NOW!
